Why your trade business gets quiet months (and how to fix it)

You had a full diary last month. This month the phone is silent. You haven’t changed anything, done worse work, or put your prices up. So what happened?
Nothing. That’s the problem.
Quiet months aren’t usually caused by anything you did. They’re caused by the absence of anything that reliably brings work in. Most trade businesses run on the same three taps, and all three are unreliable:
Repeat customers. Great, but they come back when they need you, not when you need them.
Word of mouth. The best leads there are, but you can’t schedule a referral.
Luck. The right person finding your number at the right time.
When all three line up, you’re busy. When they don’t, you’re refreshing your inbox. A business on those three taps isn’t badly run, it’s just got no floor under it.
What a floor looks like
A steady flow of leads means work arriving whether or not this month’s referrals show up. That’s what lead generation actually is. Not growth, not scale, just a baseline you can count on. For most London trades it means Google Ads pointed at the searches your customers already type, with the cost of every enquiry tracked.
The compounding bit
Here’s what people miss. A steady flow of leads doesn’t just fill this month. Every job you do well becomes a review, a referral, and repeat work. The leads you buy this month quietly build the word of mouth that used to arrive by accident. Ads don’t replace referrals, they manufacture them.
How to start
Work out your average job value. That number decides everything.
Find out what a lead costs in your trade and area. There’s no universal answer, but there is your answer, and it takes about a week of running to see.
Set a spend you’d happily lose for one month as a test. If the maths works, scale it. If it doesn’t, stop, and you’ve bought certainty for a month’s spend.
We build lead generation systems for trades across north-west London. Same-day enquiry tracking, plain-English monthly reports, no lock-in tricks. Book a free 15-minute call and we’ll tell you what your floor could look like.
